The restaurant is a good 90 minute drive from us, but we have clients who live in Margueron just 20 minutes away so we decided that the next time we visited the property we would make a reservation at Harveys and ask if the Harveys burger would be available on the menu and it was.  We booked a table for Thursday 22nd December and waited in anticipation ….

We arrived at Harveys Restaurant at 12:30pm.  No problem with parking the car as they have free parking front and rear of the restaurant.  As soon as we walked through the door, Tracey Robshaw, host and owner gave us a wonderful greeting and showed us to our table in the quaint dining area which has a lovely old wood burner situated in the corner of the restaurant.  The restaurant comfortably seats 30 people inside with a new addition of the outside terrace area seating another 30 people.

Harveys Restaurant chef and owner Peter Robshaw prides himself in offering fresh, locally bought produce and meals cooked to order.  The beef they serve is Argentinian and they change the 4 course Menu du Jour on a daily basis.

The “other half” ordered the Harveys Burger and strawberry tart for dessert and I ordered the menu du jour – why not I don’t do it every day and at fantastic value of 12€50!  The soup of the day was home made vegetable with spicy sausage, I then had the leek tart followed by the pasta with wild mushrooms and lemon tart.  Yummy scrummy it was indeed and the hubby was ecstatic with his burger!  All fresh, home made and cooked to order – a rarity these days at these kind of prices!!

Peter the chef made an appearance at the end of service and introduced himself to all the diners including ourselves.  We had a long chat with both Tracey and Peter about the restaurant and cannot wait to visit them again in February for my husband’s birthday treat.

The restaurant is currently closed for refurbishment until 29th January 2012, but will open for a special Burns Night Dinner on Wednesday 25th January 2012 at 7.30pm.  Harveys will be offering a 5 course menu at 20€ per person.  Burns Night menu below.

We still have over 20 unadopted kittens in foster-homes. Lovingly raised – many having been hand-reared from birth – they are affectionate, sociable and used to living with other cats. But long-term life in a cat run is not a life, and they desperately need permanent homes.

Thanks to your generous financial support in 2011, we feel able to offer these young cats, microchipped, fully-vaccinated and sterilised, free to caring homes.

Each summer, we try our very best to take in all the unwanted, abandoned kittens found in outbuildings, rubbish bins, wood-piles, plastic bags etc., but if we can’t rehome the ones we still have ‘in stock’, lack of space will force us into the tragic position of having to refuse pleas for help this coming year.

Phoenix is looking for a permanent and loving home for this superb 9 year-old Arab horse, PILDYM DE NAUTIAC.

Pildym is gentle, affectionate, cooperative and has a good sense of humour.

He’s fit and athletic, but an accident when he was young makes him suitable only as a companion horse …. particularly for mares, because he can be unfriendly to geldings if there are girls around!

He can be jealous towards people and other horses, but is never nasty.

He’s had a few sarcoids in the past, but these have been successfully removed.

Pildym is unshod, lives out and would need other horsy company.

ROCK & CURRY NIGHT

The beach bar at Clairac will be closing its doors for the end of the season at midnight on Friday 30th September 2011.

The manager of the bar has therefore decided to hold an End of Season Rock ‘n’ Curry concert on that night with live music from DejaVu.

Food will be provided by Jon Davis of ‘Get Curry’D Away‘, adult meals 8.50 €, children’s meals 4 €.  Mild, spicy and vegetarian curries available.

Chicken and vegetable curries served with rice, onion bahji, naan bread and mango chutney or lime pickle from “Get Curry’D Away” - €8.50

Food served from 7.30pm, music starts at 8.30pm.

Large under cover terrace and dance/dining hall, great views of the River Lot.

I can highly recommend this bar and restaurant.  Just 6km from where I live, so I have visited on several occasions since the new Dutch owners took over in July.  Friendly welcoming staff and located in a perfect spot on Clairac plage.  Small lunch and dinner menu, with bar snacks – very happy to announce they serve Bitterballen, a Dutch snack (deep fried meatballs) which I had on many occasion when I lived in Holland.  Looking forward to visiting next year and I am hoping they may open slightly earlier than July 2012 – will keep you posted.  Sandra.  PS: I will be attending the Rock ‘n’ Curry night on Friday

Krishenka’s Vintage Treasures: **** Fantastic Chateau Dumas Workshop Giveaway 2011****.

Last October Chrissie and her daughter Terri came to our Reinventing French Textiles workshop at Chateau Dumas, our beautiful 18th century chateau and 22-acre estate in southwest France.

We had an absolutely brilliant week! The sun shone, we visited atmospheric country flea markets and rummaged in boxes, we made beautiful bags and gorgeous cushions in the studio and we went wild dyeing with woad in the woods. Our group of 8 was expertly led by our wonderful tutor, Ros Badger, author of craft book “Homemade” and a talented stylist (http://www.rosbadger.com/)

Manoir Desiderata

Travel

By Car – Driving in France is easy with an enviable system of motorways that always seem to be free of traffic. Depending on where you are departing from in the UK there are numerous ways to cross the Channel, either by ferry or The Channel Tunnel. If you catch an early morning crossing you’ll arrive at Manoir Desiderata in time for tea. Please contact us for more detailed directions.

By Air – there are two airports within an hour’s drive of Manoir Desiderata. Bordeaux and Bergerac. Book enough in advance and flights can be very cheap. Both airports offer car hire. The drive from the airport to Manoir Desiderata is a stress-free pleasant main road trip from Bergerac and gentle motorway cruise from Bordeaux.

Location

Manoir Desiderata is ideally located just 10 minutes drive from the town of Casteljaloux in one direction and around 15 minutes to Marmande in the other. Both have weekly markets, town squares, plenty of supermarkets and shops selling local produce as well as numerous restaurants and cafes.

If you want to relax by the pool, read a book and get away from it all then kick back at Manoir Desiderata. But maybe you are looking for some local activities as well?

Casteljaloux has a great golf course, in fact it’s one of the best in the region and it’s very welcoming, has a lake and forest views and is generally quiet too.

Opposite the golf course is Lac de Clarens, a very large swimming lake with a beach and lifeguards. Kids will love the adventure playground, extensive rope course and volleyball courts. Quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger pangs and take in the stunning views at the restaurant on the lake. The lake is also perfect for fishing and the bordering tracks are ideal for walking, running and biking. The trails continue into The Les Landes Forest from here so the routes are endless.

Casteljaloux is also home to a World Renown Spa, whose healing waters have provided relaxation to many – ideal after a day on the golf course or road cycling, and invaluable to those suffering from ailments such as arthritis.

The town also has an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, horse riding centre and they are very proud of their rugby team.

Walking – there are many trails at the lake, in the forest, along the rivers and canal and around the very quiet country lanes.

Cycling – if you are a keen road cyclist then you’ll be aware of the French love for the bike. Cycling here is a pleasure as not only are the country lanes quiet but if you do encounter a vehicle it will generally give you the right of way!

Wine connoisseurs will be aware of the region’s variety of vineyards and the wine tasting opportunities are endless.

7525 Distribution website is no longer working.  I have not heard anything from the company, so putting two and two together it looks like they are no longer trading.  I will be trying another company soon that deliver groceries from the UK to France, so keep a look out for my next post on UK Grocery Deliveries to France.

Autumn 2011 UPDATE

7525 Distribution:  ”We regret we have had to suspend our service at the moment” 

Paul from 7525 Distribution has informed me that they are having problems the UK end, hence why they have suspended their grocery services. This does not mean that they will no longer do the UK grocery to France run – they are just trying to find a solution. They will be informing me as soon as they are up and running again.

I have been living in SW France for three and a half years now.  I have not lived in the UK for a long while, previously living in America, Holland and working on luxury motor yachts which took me all over the Mediterranenan and Caribbean.

Times have been tough with the recession and the awful exchange rates.  I came to France to live the French way, just as I had done when living in America and Holland.   Never did I think I would order my groceries from the UK!

7525 Distribution are a new company, a shopping delivery service between the United Kingdom and France.  They deliver in my area, so I thought why not.  I registered with them and found out when their next delivery date was in my area, the Lot-et-Garonne in SW France.

It is very easy, you register with a retailer below who 7525 Distribution have a working relationship with:

You place your order online, pay and get the retailer to deliver to 7525 Distribution at their address in the UK on the delivery date 7525 Distribution supply you with.  Within 48 hours of the UK delivery, you will have your order in France.

I ordered my grocery items which also included magazines, CD’s, bed linen and cookware from Tesco.  I ordered all the specials, multi-buys, buy one get one free etc. and saved £70 off my Tesco order.  363 items in my basket and £400 later, I placed my order and waited for my goodies to arrive.

The day of the delivery arrived and I met Paul, 7525 Distribution at a delivery point 10km from our home.  Good job we took the Land Rover as there would have been no way this order would have fitted in my little Daihatsu!  The delivery charge was 20% of my total order = £80 which includes UK VAT.  Very reasonable I thought as I know there are other delivery companies that operate in the area charging considerably more than this, plus the delivery point was so close and convenient to my home.

I got home and it took me several hours to unpack 8 large boxes full of groceries, along with several bags of fresh items.  I checked the items off my order list and everything was in order – a very happy lady I was

On my next outing to the local hypermarket, I took my Tesco order with me to compare prices, just to see how much money I had saved.  For items that I could not get the equivalent to here in France, I used a British Grocery website that delivers to France and used their prices.

My total order from Tesco including the delivery charge from 7525 Distribution was £480.  To buy the same/equivalent items in France EXCLUDING DELIVERY was €976.14.  Half the price!!
