The series will follow British people living and working in the South West region of France and will reflect the wide variety of people who make the move, from old hands who’ve become part of the scenery to the new arrivals who are facing the daunting prospect of building their lives from scratch.

Thursday 9th February 2012 and we finally got out the house today after being snowed in since Sunday.  We had a telephone call from one of our elderly clients last night – we look after their pool and garden.  They are located just outside Bazens, a remote location down a very steep hill.  They could not get out and needed groceries, could we help?

The Land Rover struggled to start, the diesel was beginning to freeze, we let the car warm up for 10 minutes and then departed along the country roads driving very slowly until we came to the main roads which were clear.  We drove into Intermarche at Port-Sainte-Marie and their car park was like an ice rink.  Many of their shelves were empty, but we got what we could and headed for the tills.  Only one till open, surprise, surprise and the queue was horrendous!  I guess most of their staff could not get into work.

Groceries in the car we headed towards Bazens along the winding steep roads, the surrounding countryside looked beautiful covered in snow.  A 5 minute journey to our clients house took 20 minutes, but we got there in one piece.  A little nerve racking, especially as their house is downhill, I just hoped we could get back up it!  Nevertheless they were over the moon that we could help them out – we were their life savers, especially as there was beer on their shopping list!

After a nice hot cup of coffee we left to go to another clients property located 11km from Bazens near Prayssas.  Their property is also rural and on top of a very steep hill.   After 10 minutes of driving we decided it was not worth killing ourselves on the icy roads, so we turned back and headed off home.  Our good deed of the day has been done and the other properties we look after will have to wait until the roads are less hazardous.

According to Meteo France, there are 55 departments that are on Orange Alert today, the Lot-et-Garonne department being one of them.  Due to be -14 Celsius tonight (6.8F), brrrrr!  Keep warm and be safe everyone!

I moved from New York to the Lot-et-Garonne department in SW France in August 2007. Gone were the freezing Winter days, digging ourselves out of foot high snow  and hello to a more comfortable mild Winter in SW France.  Well that was until I woke up this morning to 5cm of snow which was covering the garden and surrounding countryside!  Yes this is rare in this part of the World, mind you we were hit by a hurricane in January 2009 and the year ended with a sprinkling of snow which lasted a couple of hours – I just put this down to a freak year of weather!  Global warming, no I don’t think so with much of Central and Eastern Europe in freezing hazardous conditions, many people losing their lives to the cold and I think how lucky I am that I can afford heating oil and wood for the wood burners.  So please stay warm and drive safely if you need to go out.  Food is in the cupboard, home made French onion soup is on the stove and I am going to  stay in my PJ’s and hibernate for the next few days

For the past 2 years, an English couple, Peter and Suzanne have run the French Connexion Cafe in St Pardoux Isaac which is opposite Intermarche, (between Miramont-de-Guyenne and Eymet).  I had heard about the cafe through speaking to friends and various local newsletters.  Today I visited the cafe for the first time.

Yes we are in SW France and the cafe caters mainly for the British punters serving bacon and sausage butties, fish and chips and an all day breakfast etc., but these are things that us Brits miss dearly and often crave for, so good for Peter and Suzanne who are trying to make a go of their business in these dire times.

They have a curry night event soon and every Friday night is Fish & Chip night.  They also sell second hand English books, an English newspaper is always on hand and the cafe is a Wifi zone.

The restaurant is a good 90 minute drive from us, but we have clients who live in Margueron just 20 minutes away so we decided that the next time we visited the property we would make a reservation at Harveys and ask if the Harveys burger would be available on the menu and it was.  We booked a table for Thursday 22nd December and waited in anticipation ….

We arrived at Harveys Restaurant at 12:30pm.  No problem with parking the car as they have free parking front and rear of the restaurant.  As soon as we walked through the door, Tracey Robshaw, host and owner gave us a wonderful greeting and showed us to our table in the quaint dining area which has a lovely old wood burner situated in the corner of the restaurant.  The restaurant comfortably seats 30 people inside with a new addition of the outside terrace area seating another 30 people.

Harveys Restaurant chef and owner Peter Robshaw prides himself in offering fresh, locally bought produce and meals cooked to order.  The beef they serve is Argentinian and they change the 4 course Menu du Jour on a daily basis.

The “other half” ordered the Harveys Burger and strawberry tart for dessert and I ordered the menu du jour – why not I don’t do it every day and at fantastic value of 12€50!  The soup of the day was home made vegetable with spicy sausage, I then had the leek tart followed by the pasta with wild mushrooms and lemon tart.  Yummy scrummy it was indeed and the hubby was ecstatic with his burger!  All fresh, home made and cooked to order – a rarity these days at these kind of prices!!

Peter the chef made an appearance at the end of service and introduced himself to all the diners including ourselves.  We had a long chat with both Tracey and Peter about the restaurant and cannot wait to visit them again in February for my husband’s birthday treat.

The restaurant is currently closed for refurbishment until 29th January 2012, but will open for a special Burns Night Dinner on Wednesday 25th January 2012 at 7.30pm.  Harveys will be offering a 5 course menu at 20€ per person.  Burns Night menu below.

We still have over 20 unadopted kittens in foster-homes. Lovingly raised – many having been hand-reared from birth – they are affectionate, sociable and used to living with other cats. But long-term life in a cat run is not a life, and they desperately need permanent homes.

Thanks to your generous financial support in 2011, we feel able to offer these young cats, microchipped, fully-vaccinated and sterilised, free to caring homes.

Each summer, we try our very best to take in all the unwanted, abandoned kittens found in outbuildings, rubbish bins, wood-piles, plastic bags etc., but if we can’t rehome the ones we still have ‘in stock’, lack of space will force us into the tragic position of having to refuse pleas for help this coming year.

Phoenix is looking for a permanent and loving home for this superb 9 year-old Arab horse, PILDYM DE NAUTIAC.

Pildym is gentle, affectionate, cooperative and has a good sense of humour.

He’s fit and athletic, but an accident when he was young makes him suitable only as a companion horse …. particularly for mares, because he can be unfriendly to geldings if there are girls around!

He can be jealous towards people and other horses, but is never nasty.

He’s had a few sarcoids in the past, but these have been successfully removed.

Pildym is unshod, lives out and would need other horsy company.

The beach bar at Clairac will be closing its doors for the end of the season at midnight on Friday 30th September 2011.

The manager of the bar has therefore decided to hold an End of Season Rock ‘n’ Curry concert on that night with live music from DejaVu.

Food will be provided by Jon Davis of ‘Get Curry’D Away‘, adult meals 8.50 €, children’s meals 4 €.  Mild, spicy and vegetarian curries available.

Chicken and vegetable curries served with rice, onion bahji, naan bread and mango chutney or lime pickle from “Get Curry’D Away” - €8.50

Food served from 7.30pm, music starts at 8.30pm.

Large under cover terrace and dance/dining hall, great views of the River Lot.

I can highly recommend this bar and restaurant.  Just 6km from where I live, so I have visited on several occasions since the new Dutch owners took over in July.  Friendly welcoming staff and located in a perfect spot on Clairac plage.  Small lunch and dinner menu, with bar snacks – very happy to announce they serve Bitterballen, a Dutch snack (deep fried meatballs) which I had on many occasion when I lived in Holland.  Looking forward to visiting next year and I am hoping they may open slightly earlier than July 2012 – will keep you posted.  Sandra.  PS: I will be attending the Rock ‘n’ Curry night on Friday
